Gee, can anyone guess what I did last night? The great part about being in the Honors House is that you HAVE to go to a free performance at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts to graduate with honors from the HoHo. Oh no. Don't FORCE me to go to a free opera. No, no, stop!

So last night I went to the dress rehearsal of 'The Marriage of Figaro.' We had an hour-long lecture from the head of the Opera dept. beforehand ( 'we' being HoHo students who got free tickets...) and among the other interesting tidbits about Mozart's life that he shared with us, he revealed that in Interview With a Vampire, when Tom Cruise as Lestat is dancing around with the corpse and singing, he's singing Non pił andrai in " really, pretty damn good Italian." ( Puu: ...huh, that's interesting. )

So the lecture was from 7-8, and the opera lasted from 8-11:30 pm. Unfortunately, I had a review from 5-7, and class from 8-1, so I didn't really eat all day until midnight when I came home. ( I skip breakfast, and 1-5 is dedicated to a much-needed nap. ) So I ate, and collapsed into bed, and all night I had lovely dreams full of opera music.

Darnit, all you people with small screens. I'll try to narrow down my layout more. :D

Happy Birthday, Kya-chan! Hope you have a great one ^^

Ack, Matt, you were coughing up blood? O_o;; I'm glad to hear it was just bruising.

So, Gregly-tachi are picking me up tonight, and we're partying at Krisit's. :D Since I have some concert or another to go to on Saturday night ( The Music of Northern India or something...bleh...my parents are insisting I go with them ) I can't make it to JAC++. Hell, I may just go home after the party at krisit's and sleep all afternoon. But we must go to Damon's again and 0Wn. XD

My sister, her husband, and their dog are visiting this weekend. Lucius is a pretty cool dog; it'll be fun to play with him. ( I'm afraid I may be a touch allergic to him...damn. Oh well. Never let allergies stop me before. I like animals. )

I am...really damn sleepy. >_<

*groom groom* Winter makes my hair really staticy and messy. My hair's rather fine, and has the tendency to wave, so it gets matted far too easily. >_< I spent a solid half hour untangling my hair the other day. ( It goes down past my waist, so I need all that time to do it. ;;^^ )

Oh, Ka-chan, the ML saga gets even more interesting now. :D The 'flamer' watched Buffy, and realized that almost all of the really funny one-liners in said fics were ripped off from Buffy. ( Which wasn't a big secret, but... ) So she posted saying, ' Well, uh, that makes the fics slightly less original because the 'original' bit about this fic was that Such-and-Such a character was witty, but now I realize it's borrowed wit." And then she said something like it made her have less respect for the authors, the authors took umbrage, the other people took umbrage, someone says, ' but everyone borrows lines', etc etc. ( Sad thing is, it's not a FALSE accusation. ;;^^ ) I mean, sheesh. And the Flamer said that she was amused that people could get so worked up at any criticism of their work.

I agree with you, Ka-chan, about criticism. I know that with original stories, people take great care with their plot and characters, and since it's something they created, I could see them getting hurt if the characters are criticized. ( Doesn't mean they shouldn't at least listen to criticism.) But FANFICTION. Geez, it's using borrowed characters and situations. You should be prepared for people to shout, ' hel-lo~~ OOC!' or stuff like that, since there IS a canon, and it's not yours. If that makes any sense.

An example of a post from said ML:
I know how incredibly nitpicky and silly this is, but I have what could be a slight flaw in [the most recent chapter] (I KNOW, god forbid....dont worry, the rest is WONDERFUL ).....[signed] So-and-so, ashamed at how nit picky she is
*gag* She was pointing out a continuity error between the fic and the canon. Can one bow and scrape any more?

And now they're calling the Flamer a troll and telling her to get off-list. :P I mean, this is just STUPID.

Bah, I'm done. I'm just finishing my email before I go home and sleep. X_x

" Well, in this patriarchal society, it's hard for a competent evil woman to start a reign of terror all by herself. They have to find a husband to get the position. So, Priya, you'll have to settle for being Lady Macbeth." - Dad

I'm still sleepy. Grabbed another nap, though.

My sister is getting artificially inseminated on Friday. She's 27 and been married for, what, almost 4 years. She's having trouble ovulating, I understand. I don't know what to think about this; my knee-jerk reaction was, ' isn't she rushing to get this done? She's only 27, shouldn't she start panicking after 30, maybe?' But we'll see. I think she just really wants a child, and is freaking out. She's on Clomid and all those other fertility drugs. Well, I'm a Clomid baby, so there's hope for her. XD

I remembered what I wanted to blog about at last. o.o; There's a certain fanfic ML that I'm on that is dedicated to two fanfic timelines, with about four or five fanfic series spread between the two timelines. ( If that makes any sense. ) The listowners post their fic, the 600+ members chatter about it, or about nothing at all, you know the deal. It's a ML. Recently a flamewar erupted because someone on the list said this: ( now lemme find the damn post...heavily snipped, with as much ID'ing stuff removed as possible...)
Okay, I've been reading these past posts about...flamers, etc., and I have a few comments.
--Warning: The following message is *compleatly* devoid of sucking up to any list moms. Thank you.-- While it is wrong to flame *any* author, I think everyone needs to come to grips with the fact that not all readers like (fanfic X). I'll admit it: I didn't for the longest time. I joined this list because of ( the other fanfic. ). I read (fanfic X) at some point because everyone else had. and I wasn't impressed. Sorry. It just did not seem plausable at all. It was too James Bond-esque. I wasn't a (relationship of choice) fan at the time, either, so it didn't hold much appeal to me. I don't think that so-and-so is a pompous writer in the least- showing off her SAT vocabulary? I'm a high school student, and nothing passed over *my* head.
Why did I keep reading after the fist chapter? Because I thought it was mildly interesting. I was curious about how much a writer could say with the plot of 'A and B love each other, but he's a secret agent and she isn't, plus we have this witty Mary Sue to lighten things up'- the Mary Sue being (character C). So I read it all, then I went back and re-read it. Three times. Slowly I started to appriciate it. It was an interesting plot, as interesting as it can be when you've wacked (character D), that is. ^_^ I think that (character C) *is* a Mary Sue. A good Mary Sue, of course, but a Mary Sue none the less. The idea of (character A) being a secret agent was orginal, therefore worthy of being read. (Character B) also becoming an agent was downright sappy. (The author) seemed to be aiming for a real-life feel, and that was just *too* peachy-keen. To me, it's a fic, just like the millions of other fics out there....these stories, IMHO, have a very different feel than the cannon....Sorry if I didn't pump any egos, but I think you get that enough on here. I'm sure you will all dissmiss this as the ramblings of a silly minor, but be that as it may, not all of us worship the four list moms as the goddesses (goddessi?) they are made out to be."
( she ended the post by commented that she's probably alienated herself. ;;^^ ) I read this and thought, hm, wow, someone dares to actually have an opinion about a fic other than ' OMG!!!!! THIS IS SO GOOD!!!!!' which is what a large majority of the posts on this ML are. And believe me, with 800 members, it gets old fast. I also didn't think the tone of her post was excessively confrontational.

Of course, a flamewar broke out. People jumped to the author's defense, claiming that character C wasn't a Mary Sue; she was just an original character who became the heroine's best friend and will be the maid of honor at the wedding. :P Which, to me, sounds vaguely fishy, but whatever. I just didn't understand the knee-jerk reaction people had to someone saying that a fanfic wasn't perfect. It's not like she was flaming it blatantly; she just said that 'so-and-so is a Mary Sue, and this isn't my favorite fic of the ones on this list.'

It makes me wonder what the point of making or joining a fanfic ML is. If you just want to read the fic, you can do that on ff.net or on the authors' webpages. And if you're the author, why make a list if all you want is mindless kudos? I mean, I know it feels good, and that flamers can totally kill your will to write, but...what's the point if you can't take any criticism other than spelling or grammar? Isn't the point of making a ML so that you can get real feedback about flow, character development, and so on from your readers?

I read a really good rant about that once. I just can't for the life of me remember where it was. Hmm...probably somewhere around the [ CABS site. ] Actually, no, I found it; read [ this ] and [ this. ]

Well, anyways. :P I was trying to blog about something non-anime-related. o.o

You die! You go to hell and you die!

New layout! ( layout-h0 o.o ) I know it's not black, but...er...oh well, whatever.

Becca wanted the link for the Basara manga translations; it's [ here,] at the [ Legend of BASARA page. ] Reading the summaries is good too; that's a summary + scans, as opposed to a script-form.

Um...gosh, I'm sleepy. Got about 4, 4.5 hours of sleep. >_<

Yesterday I finished [
Berserk ]...all I can say is...hoo hah. o.@;;;; Gosh, that was rather disturbing. I like the cyclical nature of the plot of Berserk - it ends where it begins. I read on a page somewhere that the Berserk anime is more a character study than a conventional story. It shows us this guy, Gatts, who has major Ish. " Why is he this way? What's with the symbol, one arm, one eye? WELL..." And then it explains why Gatts is the way he is, and then it ends. It's very interesting, if you think about it. Berserk is a very dark, very violent show, but it's a good show because it HAS a plot and character development; it just happens to be set in a particularly ugly time. It's not just mindless violence or a fighting anime.

And [ Griffith ] oWns me. H_H I like 'em just a touch crazy anyways. :D

Krisit, I can make it to the party, AFAIK; Gregly-tachi, can you pick me up on the way to Charleston? Would that be cool? I have to be back by Saturday but there's JAC anyways.

I am...sleepy. Got a noon quiz on third declension nouns in Latin. All I have to remember is, for the singular nouns:

Nom.
Gen.
Dat.
Acc.
Abl.
Masc/Fem
-
is
i
em
e
Neuter
-
is
i
-
e

And for the plural:

Nom.
Gen.
Dat.
Acc.
Abl.
M/F
es
um
ibus
es
ibus
Neuter
a
um
ibus
a
ibus
And that adjectives for neuter nouns take the second declension, and for m/f nouns they take the first declension.

At least I think that's how it goes.

I'm gonna crash now for a while. X_x

Current design: Shuri and Ageha from BASARA. Shuri is the Red King, and Ageha is the Blue Noble - or, alternately, Shuri is the pervert, and Ageha is the total freak. :D I love 'em both - it's hard not to snicker at them when they're at their worst. XD
